Washington Wineries Sitting in the midst of perfect conditions for grape harvesting, Washington wineries produce wines that are meticulously prepared with the utmost dedication to ensure that the wine does justice to each varietal.

Washington wineries are a relatively new industry, but Washington has already become the second-largest wine producer in America. Washington state wineries are continually making a mark on the international wine scene with its high-quality, elegant, and sought-after wines. Washington wineries frequently produce wines which score 90 and above from the major wine media.

Washington state wineries produce wine from almost thirty varietal: there are sixteen varietals producing white wines and fourteen varietals producing red wines. (This excludes the production of combination wines.) The most celebrated white wines from Washington wineries are Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Semillon. Riesling was the first grape varietal to be cultivated in the Washington area, and when the conditions are right Washington wineries are able to produce remarkable ice wine from the varietal of Riesling.

Another white wine from Washington state wineries that has been making ripples in the wine circle around the world is Semillon. This white wine is mostly enjoyed young, when it mesmerizes the palate with a varied fresh flavor. However, it does give a luscious yet lighter feel on the palate as it matures.

Washington wineries also produce some gorgeous red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir, to name a few. Cabernet Sauvignon is produced by Washington state wineries as an intense, deep, rich, and complex wine that creates tough competition for the rival top-class wine of its varietal. Cabernet Sauvignon produced by Washington wineries is intensely fruity and not overly tannic, with a smooth and luxurious character.

Washington state wineries have been producing Merlot for a long time, but it was discovered in the international scene just over two decades ago. Merlot used to be used mostly in combination with other varieties of grape to produce wine, but its significance as a varietal on its own was established in early 1970s. Washington wineries produce excellent Merlot with a sweet and smooth full-bodied taste and a complex aroma.

Washington state wineries also offer wine tours for enthusiasts who want to taste wine from the source. These tours let you enjoy the spectacular scenery while sipping on world-class wine from the source – it doesn’t get any better than that. Most of these Washington wineries offer wine tasting rooms, retail sales, wedding facilities, reception facilities, bed and breakfasts, picnic areas, RV parking and a gift shop. Washington wineries produce excellent wines which not only achieve scores of 90 and above from the wine media, but which also earn medals. One such winery is the Maryhill Winery, which was named “2009 Washington Winery of the Year” by Wine Press Northwest. Maryhill produces nineteen varietals and a total of twenty-seven award-winning wines.

Another fine Washington winery is Chateau Ste. Michelle. This is one of the few premium wineries in the world with two state-of-the-art wineries, one devoted to whites and the other to reds. Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington state’s founding winery, with some of the oldest and most acclaimed vineyards in the Columbia Valley. Its commitment to quality has led Chateau Ste. Michelle to earn some of the highest accolades in the wine industry today.
