Jack and Jamie Davies, the creators of Schramsberg, were adamant about finding a more straightforward and purposeful existence. They found a dilapidated winery on the mountainside above St. Helena in 1965, following a year-long search. The tangled remnants of once-stately gardens and underground vaults were ruled by the Victorian home from the 19th century. The Davies were seeking a challenge, but the old Schramsberg property had been deserted for years. They made the decision to revive Schramsberg on that day.
Making wine—not just any wine—was the Davies family’s goal. They had the ambitious objective of creating a sparkling wine of the highest caliber. The 1965 Blanc de Blancs, which would be the first Chardonnay-based sparkling wine to be used commercially, was created later that year.
