The 280-acre Quintessa property, which is tucked away in the center of Rutherford, exhibits a variety of geology, biodiversity, exposures, and microclimates. Founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus were inspired by this unique land and thought it was destined to become one of the greatest wine estates in the world. Currently, 26 vineyard blocks totaling 160 acres are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère. For the purpose of preserving and enhancing the subtleties of the land, each block is grown organically and Biodynamic®, harvested, and vinified separately. Motivated by the natural splendor of the country, the Huneeus family committed themselves to encapsulating its harmony and beauty in a superb wine.
Quintessa may contain some or all of the five grape varieties that are farmed on the property: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère, depending on the vintage. Early in the morning, the fruit is picked, sorted, and gravity-fed into concrete, stainless steel, or wood tanks before being vinified. Each plot’s wine is matured individually in French oak for up to two years once fermentation and maceration are finished. Following the creation of the final Quintessa blend, the wine is bottled and allowed to mature for an additional year before being released.
